Physically Colliding with Sound

A wonderfully unique approach to using VR tools as a performance medium.

“Physically Colliding with Sound”, performed by Raul Altosaar, is a giant augmented reality instrument which enables expressive and embodied interactions with musical sounds and sequences located in the real world. This instrument is built inside of a video game engine. It uses virtual reality sensors to map musical samples and MIDI sequences onto physical objects and spaces.

During the performance, these sensors are triggered through gestural and bodily movement by a performer wielding two controllers. This instrument is unique due to its infinitely modular structure which enables new, more embodied forms of musical interaction. “Physically Colliding with Sound” therefore uses emerging technologies to explore the outer limits of instrument design, human-computer interaction, and musical performance.
