Art and Electronic Media / Dr. Edward Shanken

Lecture by Dr. Edward Shanken @ Warehouse 21 – upstairs theater

Dr. Shanken’s lecture will offer historical insights into the social and cultural implications of science and technology. It will discuss the role of new media arts as an integral 21st century component of contemporary art. It will explore the motivation of art making in general and new media arts in particular. New media arts, while they have become a major element of contemporary art, are not prevalent in the art market. Therefore, artists that are using this form offer insight into the creative drive. The Lecture will also address overriding social issues around technology and the role the arts play in humanizing and mitigating a potentially oppressive and pervasive force in our lives. It will discuss emerging shifts in tastes and aesthetics that have grown out of technology.
