Parallel Studios is seeking proposals from independent curators for a satellite exhibition that will be featured as a part of CURRENTS NEW MEDIA 2017, Santa Fe’s 8th annual international new media festival.

Selections for our exhibition will be announced on February 1st 2017

Proposals must be conceptually rigorous and focus on artists and themes that follow the mission of the Festival.

While New Media Arts embody the basic motivations and intentions of all the fine arts, their distinctive use of technologies that are pervasive in 21st Century culture, make New Media Art a bridge between contemporary art and the general public. The Festival introduces the public to new technology molded by artists into vehicles for expression and the communication of ideas, broadening the definition of 21st century art making and fostering a more expansive use of technology.

• Curators may not include their own work in the exhibition.
• The curator and proposed artists can be of any nationality.
• Curators are expected to be involved in all aspects of exhibition planning.
• Previous experience curating exhibitions is a plus but not mandatory. Equal consideration will be given to those in the beginning stages of their curatorial careers.
• Projects will be judged by the strength of their concept and the organizer’s ability to communicate his/hers ideas. A successful proposal will illustrate an eye for detail, and an ability to communicate and understand workload management.
• Parallel Studios strongly encourages applications that contribute to its ongoing commitment to diversity.
• The exhibition area is limited to 27.5′ x 38′ / 8.4m x 11.6m (1045 sq ft / 97m2)

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• A synopsis of the proposed project (100 words or less)
• A detailed narrative description of the proposed project (750 words of less)
• A list of possible participating artists with bio for each.
• Work samples – photos (JPEG, PDF, PNG)  / videos (Vimeo or Youtube URLs preferred)
• A complete budget worksheet (including curator’s stipend, artists’ stipend if applicable, travel and shipping expenses, hospitality and production cost)
• Curator’s CV

PARALLEL STUDIOS SUPPORT

• Agreed upon costs up to $8,000 USD (there is some flexibility here for exceptional proposals)
• Will provide installation assistance
• Will provide entire build out (walls, electricity, lights)
• A venue, either within the main exhibition or an auxiliary exhibition space

Parallel Studios a (501(c)(3) non-profit, has been producing, curating and designing small and large scale exhibitions in Santa Fe since 2002. In 2010 we launched CURRENTS NEW MEDIA as an annual, citywide event. The Festival brings together the work of established and emerging New Media Artists, from New Mexico, the US and the World, for events showcasing New Media Installations, Outdoor Video and New Media Installations, Single Channel Video and Animation, Multimedia Performance, Fulldome, Experimental or Interactive Documentary, Augmented Reality / Mobile Device Apps / Art-Gaming / Web-Art, Virtual Reality Environments, Robotics, Digitally Generated Objects (ie. 3D Printing) and Interactive Installations for Children.
