Submission Guidelines 2021

Submissions for CURRENTS New Media 2021 are now Closed.

2021 Festival Dates: June 18 – 27

Deadline: Monday, February 1, 2021

Selection notifications will go out to all artists on March 15, 2021

All applicants must submit the online submission form.  Please read these guidelines before filling out the form.

Due to pandemic uncertainties we are planning for both an Online Festival and making initial plans for a smaller onsite festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

The 3 Categories covered in this application are:

  • Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality Environments
  • Multimedia Performance
  • Desktop Experiences

Levels of compensation will depend on our own funding situation and will be discussed with artists under consideration.

Submission Form Instructions

Work Samples

  • Video documentation or work samples must be viewable online (personal website, YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, etc)
  • uploaded hi-res photos and video still captures should be no larger than 3MB .jpg only

Follow these steps to fill out the Submission Form:

  • Fill out the general information at the top of the Form.
  • Select the Category in which you wish to submit your work. Each Category has a separate set of questions.
  • Once you have selected the Category you can fill out the remainder of the Form.
  • Select whether you are submitting a single submission or multiple submissions. This will determine your fee – $25/single, $20 each/multiple.
  • Submit the Form.
  • Once you have submitted the form and paid your fee you will receive an email notification with a copy of the form you submitted.
  • You are welcome to submit multiple entries in one or more categories. You must submit a new form and pay the fee separately for each entry.

Submission Categories

Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality Environments – as a tool for art making

Installation, interactive, narrative, or documentary based work will be considered. Feel free to contact us with questions. For the initial review we require only video samples.

CurrentsVR Submission Requirements

There are two applications for CurrentsVR.  One is supported on Desktop PC’s for the HTC Vive and Oculus headsets and the other is supported as a standalone application on the Oculus Quest.

  • For initial review Applicants can provide a link to a trailer for the VR work. If we decide to move forward we will ask for an executable and / or an apk file before final selection.
  • If selected, applicants will need to provide either a Unity project file or a Unity package for the final application.
  • Ideally selected projects for both must be developed with Unity version 2019.4.0f1 LTS or greater using the Universal Render Pipeline and the XR Interaction Toolkit.
  • If a selected project does not use Unity 2019.4.0f1 LTS, the Universal Render Pipeline, or the XR Interaction Toolkit it will need to be updated to support all of them either by the applicant or with the assistance of the lead CurrentsVR developer.

CurrentsAR Submission Requirements

CurrentsAR uses ARKit and ARCore on supporting iPhone and Android devices.  Applicants can submit 3D models, 3D animations, audio, or video of an augmented reality app they have already developed for review.  There is also room for content not listed above that an applicant thinks would work in AR.

If selected, applicants will need to provide either:

  • a FBX file for their 3D model or 3D animation
  • a .wav file for their audio
  • a copy of the content they think would work in AR
  • a Unity project file or a Unity package for their augmented application
Selected content that is not a Unity project will be implemented into the application by the Currents VR developer.
Ideally selected projects use Unity version 2019.4.0f1 LTS or greater using ARKit and / or ARCore.
If a selected project does not use Unity 2019.4.0f1 LTS with ARKit and / or ARCore it will need to be updated to support all of them either by the applicant or with the assistance of the lead CurrentsVR developer.


Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality Environments Submissions must include:

  • a completed online submission form for each work
  • the title of the work, year created and duration if applicable (if not applicable enter NA)
  • a website or link where video documentation of the work can be seen (see work sample description above)
  • if you are sending a link for a video that is password protected enter the password
  • brief bio – 875 characters max
  • brief statement about the work you are submitting – 875 characters max
  • Upload a complete description of the work / .pdf only
  • upload a CV/resume .pdf only
  • upload 2 to 3 still images of the proposed work (see image requirements above) .jpg only

Multimedia Performance

Both Live Onsite Performances and Live Stream Performances will be considered.

Submissions must include:

  • a completed online submission form for each work
  • the title of the work, year created and duration
  • a website or link where work can be seen (see work sample description above)
  • if you are sending a link for a video that is password protected enter the password
  • brief bio – 875 characters max
  • brief statement about the work you are submitting – 875 characters max
  • upload a complete description of the work .pdf only
  • upload a CV/resume .pdf only
  • upload 2 to 3 still images of the proposed work (see image requirements above) .jpg only
  • if you are proposing a live onsite (in Santa Fe) performance, please upload a performance floor plan indicating ideal space requirements / .jpg or .pdf only
  • If an in-person performance in Santa Fe upload an equipment list (indicating which equipment you are able to supply and which you will need the festival to supply) and minimum number of artists and tech personnel required to travel .pdf only

Desktop Experiences & 360 Video

We are looking for artists working in the online environment creating interactive or journey based work designed for desktop engagement.

Submissions must include:

  • a completed online submission form for each work
  • the title of the work, year created and duration if applicable (if not applicable enter NA)

  • if you are sending a link for a video that is password protected enter the password
  • brief bio – 875 characters max
  • brief statement about the work you are submitting – 875 characters max
