Encryptid portraits are a series of interactive illustrations of cryptid creatures that use facial recognition to mirror a viewer’s own facial expressions. The installation consists of seven salvaged computer monitors built into colorful ornamental frames. The variety of cryptids mimicking invites play and curiosity to see your own face represented in each whimsical form. At the same time the form factor references that of paintings, making a viewer’s interaction intuitive and accessible. Cameras mounted on each monitor capture wide angles and are mounted low to pick up on faces of children and people of all heights.
