(Fairgrounds) | Encryptid
Encryptid is an installation of interactive 3D models of cryptid creatures that use facial recognition to mirror a viewer’s own facial expressions. The installation consists of five iPads built into ornamental frames. The variety of cryptids available across five screens invites play and curiosity to see your own face represented in each whimsical form. At the same time the form factor references that of paintings, making a viewer’s interaction intuitive and accessible.
Each iPad’s camera and 3D scanning hardware can reliably capture wide angles to pick up on faces of children and people of all heights. A custom app developed on Apple’s preexisting facial recognition libraries means the installation is very stable and requires little maintenance. Originally built for Currents 2020, this project has now been fully realized and it’s ready to go.
