In The Balance

In The Balance is a sequence of images selected from two separate print series, Tidal Arrays (2023) and Oil Cloth (2024). Both series are post-photographic explorations utilizing generative AI to seamlessly meld simulated elements including, lens-based photo-real imagery with hand-drawn and painted gestural details. Tidal Arrays revisits an ongoing childhood fascination with the miniature ecosystems that dot intertidal zones. The watery domain of soft bodied Cnidarias, such as anemones layered with fragments of kelp and sea weeds, fractured shells and residual spills of industrial effluents combine in these dynamic visual compositions to evoke the whirling fluid motion of tide pools. Oil Cloth is a fictional performance-installation also set in the shallow waters of a fictional shoreline permeated with discharged petroleum and man-made dregs and debris. Like a banner or herald, the suspended cloth has been transformed by the absorption of toxins. This floating shroud becomes both a banner and herald signifying a great sacrifice and healing that lies ahead.
