Lanternhouse: No Place like Home
"Lanternhouse: No place like home" is a piece about memory and the "lightening" of personal experience. 30 years ago I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines. There I became a member of the Tilos family. They helped me build a "bamboo" hut on a beach in which I lived for two years without running water or electricity. I saw this family suffer from politics of a volatile country going through civil unrest. This piece represents a revisiting of this time and has allowed me to reconnect with more of the joy of this life altering, intense experience. The images of my family and neighbors are from scans of my photo albums. The photographs represent the ghosts of my memory: the blue symbolizes the sorrows, “the blues,” but also the potential of the sky and of a new horizon.
