Stir Qi
Energy surrounds us. It connects us to each other and the earth. In the ancient practice of Qigong (pronounced "chi gong") this energy is known as Chi. All life on the planet creates this energy and is woven together by it. Humans have the power to move Chi and cultivate it.
This piece visualizes our innate ability to move Chi energy with our hands - in combination with mental focus. Energetic activity affects our relationships, our emotions and our health. My hope is that by experiencing this art people will become curious about exploring their relationship to Chi.
Stir Qi is an interactive kinetic/audio/visual installation. We experience life through our phones and computer screens and that experience is mostly passive. We are consumers of media, not creators. This piece lets you control the media, sounds and visuals, using your hands to combine layers of video and audio. In a way you are creating your own experimental short film and making a soundtrack for it in real time.
There is one channel of video which displays affected and composited layers of video footage. There are 4 channels of audio where panning and amplitude of the sounds are affected by pushing buttons and turning knobs, and by the position of visual elements on the screen. The combined stimuli to your hands, eyes and ears transports you to a place of connection and self-expression.
