'Esperanza’s Wretched Woman' is an ongoing body of short films and videos utilizing duration, soundscape, and ritual to explore female sexuality/sensuality, archetype, and gendered spaces through a series of non-verbal tableaus. Wretched Woman explores the tensions between absolutes; prolonged silence contrasted by abrupt sound, the tension contained in durational and static wide-angle shots, and the atmospheric uncanny of stylized set design that feels out of time, unplaceable. As a filmmaker with an arts background, I have encountered skepticism from both the film and art worlds concerning the legitimacy of the other (i.e. "video art" vs. "movies"). I fall somewhere in the middle so the series is an attempt to reconcile the two.
