Esperanza’s "Wretched Woman" is an ongoing body of short films and videos utilizing duration, soundscape, and ritual to explore female sexuality, sensuality, archetype, and gendered spaces through a series of non-verbal tableaus. "Wretched Woman" explores the tensions between absolutes; prolonged silence contrasted by abrupt sound, the tension contained in durational and static wide-angle shots, and the atmospheric uncanny of stylized set design that feels out of time, unplaceable.
"As a filmmaker with an arts background, I have encountered skepticism from both the film and art worlds concerning the legitimacy of the other (i.e. video art versus movies). I fall somewhere in the middle so the series is an attempt to reconcile the two." - Emily Esperanza
