Oyat
Oyat is an interactive experience that intertwines ecology, natural disasters and ink painting. Inspired by the 2022 wildfire at the Dune of Pilat, the work contemplates how destruction and regeneration are woven into nature’s own rhythms, echoed in the ashes, moving dunes, and the subtle labor of marram grass (Oyat). Entering a 3D-scanned withered tree, viewers step inside a virtual interior where hand-tracking and mixed reality translate gesture into ink. The ash-like surfaces evoke shan shui painting, turning the act of creation into a dialogue between body and landscape. Sound pulses through the tree’s material, guiding viewers as they paint traces of life and flame. The experience concludes in a poetic terrain of grass, pines, and shifting sand that responds to the viewer’s motion, inviting them to become co-creators in a cycle of renewal.
