Relief 2
The fundamental concern of my sculpture is to create a living experience of the boundaries between two and three dimensions. I draw on questions that animated early modernism and use materials and processes only recently available. Photographs I have taken, printed at near life-size scale on aluminum silhouettes, are bent and twisted to evoke expressive gestures and associations such as flying or falling. Revealing and concealing the image, these works generate ambiguous responses and evoke an array of meanings. Scale, orientation, lighting and generating of shadows, and alternating between the printed and blank surfaces all participate dynamically in creating viewers’ experience of the sculptures.
