Revolving Red Monuments
R.R.M. Revolving Red Monuments is an interactive augmented reality sculpture garden exploring the history and future of Soviet monuments in Bulgaria. Co-created by artist Meredith Drum and Creative Technologist Nikita Shokhov, the work combines 3D virtual sculptures with poems about war.
Virtual sculptures by Bulgarian visual artists Albena Baeva, Eva Davidova, Slava Savova, Dessislava Terzieva, Martin Atanasov, Rositsa Getsova, Elena Kaludova, and Kalin Serapionov are combined with poems by Zhivka Baltadzhieva, Ilya Kaminsky, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, and Wisława Szymborska.
In making this work, the artists are exploring the meaning of these monuments as Russia's war of aggression continues in Ukraine. R.R.M. was developed during an Arts Prospect Residency with CEC ArtsLink and Structura Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria, and received a grant from the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech. Music and sound created for R.R.M. by Andrea Williams.
