Shape of the Universe (2)
"The Shape of the Universe (2)", 2015, is a newly completed work of video projected onto a translucent sculpture. The work incorporates geometric shapes from cosmology: inside a wire cone, which hints at the structure of an expanding universe, are suspended four fabric and wire-frame shapes. Three are of the mathematically possible geometries of the universe (a globe, saddle, and plane) and the fourth is a book, a reference guide often providing formulae or counterpoints to what is about to be projected on the rest of the sculpture. Imagery is derived from the constant formation and flux of the natural and built world, periodically accompanied, or overtaken by, underlying mathematical diagrams/formulae.
The work is part of an ongoing series called “On Becoming.” In each work imagery from a single projector evocatively floats and multiplies onto the myriad translucent surfaces of a sculptural structure.
