Silk + Sound Lab
Silk + Sound Lab is a sound installation developed during a 2024 residency at the Tbilisi Silk Museum (TSM) in Tbilisi, Georgia. The work combines four found photos from the TSM archive with found and field-recorded sounds from TSM and other sites. By stitching copper thread into images on paper we’ve created soft speakers. By matching sounds with these images, we’ve attempted to conjure a living museum: one that evokes past states of being in relation with technology; and the impacts of these relationships on human and animal subjects (the cottage industrialists who pioneered hand looms and other forms of early weaving technology; the flightless silk moth that was selectively engineered for its productivity, thousands of years ago). This museum may succeed to the extent the viewer leans into it, to puzzle over the meaning of the juxtaposed images and sounds.
