The Lonely Reef
The Lonely Reef is a beautiful symbiotic organism hosting a dreamlike bungalow oasis. Despite being a vehicle made of mostly steel, the car more closely resembles a creature encountered in the depths of the ocean, forming with its passengers the kind of symbiosis found throughout a coral reef. The art car was conceptualized and built in Santa Fe by artists Zeve Cohen and Hayden Carey, along with a rotating crew of more than 40 brilliant collaborators. Over the course of six months, the Lonely Reef team of artists transformed an old airplane tug into a rolling sculpture—part creature, part communal vessel—designed to light up The Playa at the annual arts gathering Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada. The reef is designed to offer reprieve, inspire awe and foster connection.
