The Subterranean Imprint Archive is the culmination of a year’s work collaborating with artists, academics, activists and young creatives as the pandemic took hold of South Africa. Despite difficult circumstances, we were able to collaborate remotely, or find safe ways of holding creative workshops where we could generate and share research and ideas. The aim of this experience was to create an archive which re-imagines the existing archival material, much of which has been lost or destroyed, or told from a position of power. We aimed to find ways of unearthing buried narratives and bringing them into the light. We are grateful to those who shared their stories.
