Threaded Light
I grew up outside Las Vegas, NM, on Jicarilla Apache land. My art focuses on the 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s recorded history and one that nearly consumed my childhood home. I’m drawn to the fire’s complex, ongoing impact on my sense of home. For 3.5 years, I documented the changes. Charcoal remains a constant reminder of the burn. I’ve used this charcoal as a substrate and projected video that captures new growth. The interplay of projection and charcoal reflects my experience of transformation, where change and regeneration are tangled with the memory of fire. Threaded Light is crafted from ponderosa pine sourced from the burn scar. A concealed projector casts footage that becomes distorted and abstracted over ash and debris, activating the piece and drawing viewers in to investigate its details more closely.
