What to the American Slave is the 4th of July is a historical re-interpretation of the Speech given by Frederick Douglass on July 5, 1862. The excerpt compares the position of Douglass speaking as a free Black man under the system of Slavery to our current form of slavery to the ideals of freedom and independence. The film closes with the statement “RIP Independence”, suggesting that our present day freedom has been laid to rest.
