The Dream Machine (DM) is an extension of my philosophy that all art should be participatory. As a creative technologist, my medium is light and computers. DM is a new version of an interactive light projection prototype built here in NM, where the cube reacted to the people within it for a unique live event. My team, Wonder + Light, is rebuilding the cube with new content and interactivity for a more participatory experience for SOMOS and beyond.
The Dream Machine is both a space for reflection and an active collaborator in vivid dream creation. A five-sided interactive & holographic cube, the dream machine and its participants are visible both from within and from outside the cube, varying in levels of translucency and brightness based on the interaction between the machine and the users.
The Dream Machine is 12’ x 12’ x 8’ tall cube with 5 projected surfaces (4 walls and floor). The side projection surfaces are made of a special fabric that creates a holographic effect when they interact with light, creating the unique feeling of being a part of and surrounded by the cube itself. The cube itself is fabricated of a primary metal frame and supporting wood elements and panels. (Fabric would be augmented with opaque panels during brighter times pf day for best visibility, until the best viewing time – after sundown)
Ideal for 1-2 users at a time, the Dream Machine tracks the motion and physical attributes of its users, in addition to information from its surroundings and location. Using all of this data and verbal input through interaction with the users, it creates a visual and auditory landscape unique to that moment in time and place.
Using live data, computational generated forms and realtime AI voice processing, the Dream Machine is able to take input and quickly create live and unique art pieces that never repeat. Each experience is unique and each user creates a unique ‘dream’ in that moment.
