Artist Bio
Born in Korea, Juri Hwang is a media artist and researcher based in Los Angeles. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Southern California. Juri explores the role of sound in 21st century culture as a sense modality, sensorial stimulus, and cultural object. She reflects on the current media culture and how it challenges the traditional body-mind division, with a keen attention to the immersive, embodied, and affective nature of sonic perception and memory. Her recent projects comprise “Somatic Echo,” an embodied sonic experience engaging with bone-conducted sound, which won an Honorary Mention award at the Ars Electronica Prix Art 2017, and "Nightfield" an immersive, spatial sound installation exploring sonic memories.
