“Creature” created and performed by Sam Anthem is both a performance and a being that has risen from the recent wave of literary censorship in the United States—its skin is constituted by neglected pages of banned books. The Creature is embodied through/as a full-body wearable with microcontroller-connected accelerometers underneath sending live movement data to a sound-producing Max patch. As the Creature moves through space, words from the pages of its skin, the pages of banned books, burst, mutate, and transform through realtime, reactive, amplified sound. This multimedia performance, through its confluence of movement, sound and materiality, presents a visceral reflection of how these banned books are marked other and monstrous, yet simultaneously affirms their productive powers.
